On October 16 and 17, 2020, the First Uruguayan Congress of Scientific Journals was held in Uruguay, marking the beginning of a joint initiative between the Uruguayan Association of Academic Journals (AURA) and the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors (ABEC Brasil), aimed at creating a Latin American Association of Scientific Editors.

On November 14, 2020, the Colombian Association of University Presses (ASEUC) was invited to participate in LATmétricas 2021, organized by the Collaboratory for the Analysis of Science (CoLaV) at the University of Antioquia. The invitation was later extended to ABEC Brasil and AURA.

On Friday, July 30, 2021, an initial group of scientific publishing representatives, speaking on behalf of various Latin American institutions, held a virtual meeting to discuss the consolidation of the proposal.

On September 15, 2021, the creation of ALAEC was defined, under the name Latin American Association of Scientific Publishing — a collective, academic, accessible, open, and non-commercial entity for Latin America and the Caribbean.

After two years of numerous meetings and intense work, the legal founding General Assembly of ALAEC was held on November 16, 2023, in Temuco, Chile, during which its Statute was approved, the first Board of Directors was elected, and, in accordance with the Statute, the members of the Deliberative and Fiscal Councils were appointed.
